Music Program

The CPS music program is comprehensive, expansive, and varied, offering students JK-12 a rich experience. CPS provides music, accessories, and instruments at no cost to students and families. See music program chart >>

Elementary Music Program
MusicOur elementary music program is in the midst of a district-wide adoption of the Kodaly pedagogy. Our goal is for all of our elementary schools to embrace high frequency Kodaly music education as the core of music instruction. In addition, there should also be a 4-5th grade chorus at each of the elementary schools.

5th Grade Instrumental Exploration
Our 5th grade students’ music program is dedicated to the introduction to musical instrument study. The instruments are provided to the students free of charge for as long as they continue their study of the instrument.

Upper School Music Program
The Upper School music experience is marked by choice. Students may choose to intensify instruction on their instrument from 5th grade by joining a performance oriented experience in Band or Orchestra, as well as Chorus, or may opt for a more generalized, exploratory type of music experience. Band and Orchestra students are also given small group lessons on their instrument. Students who are able and willing have the option of joining the All-City Honors Music Program, a district-wide initiative in music. All-City ensembles include a chorus, orchestra and concert band and are comprised of our most dedicated upper school students from across the city.

MusicCRLS Music Program

Music ensembles at CRLS provide an opportunity for all students to receive a comprehensive performance-based music education. Through the study of a wide range of music literature students continue to learn how to access and hone their creative processes, while learning to become intelligent consumers, producers, and/or creators of music. Students have numerous options in vocal music, band, jazz band, percussion, and orchestra. The high level of motivation required for performance courses is an invaluable asset to educational growth. School performances and community service, which contribute to developing a sense of responsibility in students, are an integral part of the music activities.
