Cambridge Public Schools Hires Chief Operations Officer

Dear CPS Community,

D. MurphyFollowing a comprehensive search, I am delighted to announce that we have hired a new Chief Operations Officer. Mr. David Murphy will be joining Cambridge Public Schools effective January 23, 2023.

As the Chief Operations Officer, Mr. Murphy will manage all aspects of operational support for the district. He will support the Superintendent in establishing policies, procedures, and practices that impact and relate to the organizational health and management of the district. Mr. Murphy will also oversee and provide support to the Facilities Management, Food Services, Safety & Security, Student Registration, and Transportation Departments.

Mr. Murphy comes to Cambridge Public Schools with over a decade of work in positions of leadership in public education. For the past three school years, Mr. Murphy has served as the Assistant Superintendent of Finance & Operations for Medford Public Schools, overseeing all non-instructional aspects along with the district’s labor relations, family and community engagement offices, and COVID-19 response systems.

He previously served in several leadership positions with the Boston Public Schools, including Chief of Staff, Deputy Superintendent, and Labor Counsel. He is also a former Chairperson of the Attleboro School Committee, worked as outside legal counsel to several Massachusetts school districts, and served as a Strategic Planning Advisor to the Superintendent of Lowell Public Schools. Mr. Murphy earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from Fordham University and his law degree, cum laude, from Boston College Law School.
