ELA/Literacy Curriculum Overview

The current ELA / Literacy curriculum for grades JK-8 was collaboratively created several years ago by educators and district leaders using a combination of standards-aligned curricular materials designed to develop critical reading, writing, speaking and listening skills. The bulk of texts and tasks in grades 3-8 are from the Expeditionary Learning (E.L.) curriculum, in addition to guided reading and writing from Fountas & Pinnell, Lucy Calkins and teacher-generated units. JK-K curriculum is primarily composed of the “FOCUS” curriculum, with explicit phonics instruction through Wilson Fundations or TLA. In grades 1 and 2, educators implement resources and practices from Fountas & Pinnell, Lucy Calkins and teacher-generated units, in addition to explicit daily phonics instruction from Wilson Fundations or TLA.

Note: A curriculum review and adoption process is currently underway in grades 6-8. The elementary curriculum review process is scheduled to begin in September, 2024.

In the earliest grades, our focus is ensuring that our scholars have are empowered to use literacy from their first experience with formal schooling. Our literacy instruction focuses on building language comprehension and foundational reading skills while immersing students in research-based, joyful, rigorous and relevant instruction. This page offers grade-specific content and standards for JK-2 caregivers and allows you to find resources to support continued learning at home.
