Caroline Hunter

CAROLINE HUNTER is a retired high school educator with forty years of teaching experience in a variety of settings: achievement programs for health careers, youth and adult drug programs, and the county house of correction. Hunter is the proud parent of a CPS student, from kindergarten to high graduation. Caroline worked at CRLS for thirty-four years in various roles: as Assistant Principal, AVID and mathematics teacher, student services and student government advisor, and mediation and leadership skills instructor. As Chair for the Concerned Black Staff (CBS), she co-wrote the CBS Report on the achievement gap and racial disparities within CPS. Caroline is a co-founder of the Benjamin Banneker Charter School with other Black parents. She has also worked as an educator and curriculum writer for various organizations, including the Cambridge Workforce, the Education Collaborative, and DARE, Inc. Caroline is dedicated to the elimination of opportunity and achievement gaps and strongly supports efforts to diversify the city’s teachers. Caroline has a BS in chemistry from Xavier University and a Med from Antioch College in adult learning. Caroline was the recipient of the Conant Fellowship to the Harvard Graduate School of Education and has a M.Ed. in administration and planning. Prior to her education career, she was a research scientist at Polaroid where she co-organized a successful boycott to protest Polaroid’s role as a supplier of photo equipment for apartheid South Africa. Caroline’s strong commitment toward educational equity and as a true advocate for justice has been acknowledged by her peers and she is the recipient of the MTA’s Louise Gaskins’ Civil Rights Award and the NEA Rosa Parks Memorial Award.
