Each year a group of practitioners certified by Mindful Schools conduct multiple 8 week sessions, 15 minutes twice a week, of classroom based mindfulness instruction. What is mindfulness? It’s a process of learning to pay attention to whatever is happening in the moment, without judgement, and with an awareness of what one's senses are experiencing. Mindfulness practice has been shown to reduce symptoms associated with stress and to create increased feelings of internal calm. Approximately 800 students receive instruction in this practice each year. Following these sessions, the mindfulness team provides support and coaching to help the teacher maintain the practice. In addition, the district provides a 10 hour professional development course in Mindfulness and another in Yoga Movement Breaks to prepare teachers to incorporate these practices into their school day.
