What Homeless Families Need To Know
Children who are homeless have the right to attend school even if:
- They don’t have a permanent address.
- They don’t have all the required documents.
- They find housing outside the district and need transportation to and from their original school.
Students must be allowed to stay in the school they were attending before becoming homeless even if they move from place to place. The school district must provide transportation to and from the child’s school if the parent wants the child to stay in their original school.
Children cannot be treated differently from their peers solely because of their residential status.
Children who are homeless are entitled to free breakfast and lunch.
Parents have a right to file a complaint if they feel their child is being kept out of school unfairly.
Unaccompanied youth [not living with parent(s) or guardian(s)] have these same rights.
